Targeted Microneedling

Authors : Dr. Sujata Mehta Ambalal.

Microneedling or Collagen induction therapy has established itself as a simple, safe & effective treatment for acne scars & wrinkles. By inducing injury, new collagen formation is stimulated. It is done by using a rolling or pen like stamping device which has multiple needles & covers areas of 0.2 -1.5 cm. sq. Using these devices, sometimes we observe that the actual groove of the wrinkle or scar is not completely targeted in spite of multiple passes. To overcome this short coming, we can use the technique of Targeted Microneedling.

Treatment can be done under topical anesthesia, with adequate asepsis. Using 26 – 30G needle or an insulin syringe containing mesotherapy solution for scars. Multiple tiny, superficial pricks are made manually along the groove of the wrinkle or scar. This can be done as a standalone treatment or before using a rolling or stamping device.

As the depth of penetration is entirely dependent on the treating physician, minimal pressure should be used to just induce pin point but not frank bleeding. Adequate precautions should be taken in dangerous areas like periorbital region to avoid hitting superficial veins. Such targeted microneedling can also be used on depressed acne scars, traumatic or chicken pox scars, striae & prominent pores. Sessions can be repeated monthly till desired results are achieved.
